So there you are! Heero grasped Duos arm and pulled him to one side of the crowd of people passing by. Duo was flushed and laughing. His braid was tucked down inside the folds of his scarf but wisps of hair had worked loose in the wind: he spat out a couple of them at the side of his mouth. Hey, yeah. Whats up? Heero felt his heart rate start to slow down again. I couldnt reach you on your cell. Theyve closed off the main roads for the parade and I wasnt sure whether you could still get to the meeting place. A bunch of people jostled past them, and he stepped away from the pavement to avoid their rush. In the background he could hear the stop-start wail of a siren. He felt surprisingly disturbed. But you found me. Duo was shrugging, still smiling. Heero started to smile back. Yes. Well, I looked for the most outrageous Easter bonnet. I knew youd be - Wearing it? Duo raised his eyebrows. Heero laughed. Idiot. I knew youd be taking a picture of it, thats all. I guessed youd follow the views, rather than the route of the parade. I guessed youd lose track of the time Duo was looking at him, closely. Were you worried about me, Heero? On the corner of a distant block, a couple of saxophonists started playing something traditional. A group of over-excited children were blowing whistles, skipping a snake-like trail along the centre of the road. Heero grunted. Of course not. Not Duo Duo, who blended in wherever he was; who entered fully into the spirit of life; who drew and photographed and narrated everywhere he went. Duo shrugged again, but he stepped back as well so that they were both standing with their backs to a shop window, no longer being swept along in the path of others. Its just that you look kinda Heero frowned. He didnt want Duo to finish that sentence, because everything was fine now. Its an hour past the meeting time, thats all. I just wondered if you were OK. Duo put a hand on Heeros shoulder. His eyes sparkled with reflected sunlight. Sorry. Youre right, I get carried away and I forget the time. Its just the sunshine, and the street theatre, and the spontaneity of it all, you know? Heero watched the reflections of the bright and exaggerated hats in the shop window behind them. Visitors in their Sunday best clothes pushed and wriggled and laughed their way past the two young men. He and Duo were momentarily still; merely spectators on the sidelines. Then he reached out and took Duos hand, lacing their fingers together. Duo looked a little startled, but he grinned and tightened his own hold. Yeah, he murmured. You can do spontaneity too, right? Heero smiled. Still holding hands, they stepped together off the pavement and rejoined the crowd. ~ * ~
